print on demand editing consultancy is a seriously enjoyable process with a good copy editor. Mine is a colour specialist too.....layout and cover design needs a copy editor that is a fine art trained specialist colour theorist...and the IT editing skills...this time around i'll not be using colour................ but i'm thinking of a coloured plates edition with commentary sometime down the line, chiefly to produce a beautiful book............

...................... if he or she is anything like i was when i supervised graduate dissertations, a reader is irritated by weak presentation of research and conclusions, poor formatting, proof reading and clumsy phrasing....... and the proper scholarly response poorly articulated research is that the thesis is average to poor to unacceptable without revision........the candidate has to bear in mind too who is going to get the thesis.......... a supervisor.....(lotto)........, second dept reader......(unpredictable).........third Dept reader.....(sometimes political....one of the three may have a history) ........... reader from another Dept .......(who????) .........and external reader (which university?)........are the peer review core and each of us have different expectations..... which is why it works too......none of us will copy edit, not even a supervisor......none expect to proof read for good English, or re-write........no layout or style sheet proof reading will be done .....just the first few errors scratched out and then the whole back to be proof read....if a candidate can't present a literate thesis, literate in every way....then no award should be considered.

watching the copy editor working is instructive....normally there is physical distance between writer and book or thesis......we don't tend to watch a proof-reader for a couple of hours for example. i've learned a lot from my editor while she creates a book.
